Cosy Nook issue could dominate election

The chairman of Port Erin Commissioners believes the future of the Cosy Nook will take centre stage at this year’s local authority general elections. Members had voted to demolish the former cafe before central government stepped in. A three-week public consultation has now been launched to decide whether the iconic building should receive registered status. Godfrey Egee spoke to Local Democracy Reporter Chris Cave:

Douglas doesn t look good enough says councillor
A councillor in Douglas says work is desperately needed to improve the look of the town.
Regeneration work is currently being carried out on the promenade and there are a number of sites which remain vacant.
Andrew Bentley, who represents Derby Ward on the local authority, believes there is a unanimous support to transform the capital.
Last year councillors criticised temporary car parks on brownfield sites in Douglas.
Council Leader David Christian said they were dragging the town down and stopping investment and looked like bomb sites .
Mr Bentley says there is a general feeling amongst the people in Douglas that the town doesn t look good enough.
Lloyds future strong and stable despite job losses

Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan has remained buoyant about the banking industry after around 120 job losses were announced. Lloyds Banking Group confirmed a third of its Isle of Man workforce were being made redundant following a shift in customer trends. Mr Cannan says the Island needs to adapt to the times and invest in digitalisation. He said: “Lloyds have been good enough to engage with us over a number of weeks to tell us that they were intending on restructuring, so we were aware of the situation. “Obviously in these circumstances my heart goes out to those who are affected.”
