The announcement Monday from Intel Corp. it plans to invest $3.5 billion at its Rio Rancho plant is encouraging. The project will generate 700 high-paying permanent positions over three years and 1,000 construction jobs. The company will retool its Rio Rancho facility, which had already become an “innovation hub,” into a domestic hub for advanced semiconductor manufacturing, even more promising given the long-term impact and reversal of job losses here. The investment is Intel’s largest commitment to New Mexico since 2009. It’s worth the $5.75 million in Local Economic Development Act funds New Mexico will provide for the expansion, which includes $5 million from the state, $500,000 from Sandoval County, $250,000 from the city of Rio Rancho and a 50% rebate on gross receipt taxes generated during construction that’s expecte

Intel Announces $3 5 Billion Investment

COVID-19 by the numbers New Mexico health officials yesterday reported 685 new COVID-19 cases over the three-day reporting period of May 1-3. Those cases bring the statewide total so far 198,372; the health department has designated 183,656 of those cases as recovered. Bernalillo County had 228 new cases, followed by San Juan County with 119 and Doña Ana County with 54. Santa Fe County had 30 new cases. The state also announced six additional deaths; there have now been 4,073 fatalities. As of yesterday, 132 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 13 fewer than Friday. Currently, 58.5% of New Mexicans have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 44.5% are fully vaccinated. In Santa Fe County, more than half of residents are now fully vaccinated: 50.1%, to be exact. And 69.2% have had at least one dose.

There are lots of science, technology, engineering and math-related jobs available in New Mexico, but companies seeking potential employees need better ways to connect with STEM professionals. To help bridge the divide, the University of New Mexico’s Alumni Association and STEM Boomerang which works to hook up in-state and out-of-state STEM professionals with local employers will offer a STEM-focused career fair Thursday for UNM alumni, students approaching graduation, and their spouses and partners. The online event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will feature presentations by 17 companies looking for talented employees in the space, biotechnology and general technology industries in New Mexico.
