As previously announced, due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns and uncertainty around travel restrictions, the ASN Board of Directors made the decision to host Nutrition 2021 as an interactive, engaging, and safe virtual event: NUTRITION 2021 LIVE ONLINE, June 7-10.

DOST-PCHRD Executive Director Dr. Jaime C. Montoya cited the readiness of the technology adopters of numerous nutritious food products of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) to launch such kind of food distribution drive.
“Tingin ko po naman ay posible pong mangyari yan dahil gusto nating makinabang ang ating mga kabayaan at ang ‘yung mga adopters natin ay willing naman po magsagawa ng ganitong pamimigay din [sa] ating kababayan ng nutribun (I think it is possible for that to happen because we want our countrymen to benefit and our adopters are willing to conduct this kind of distribution of nutribun to our people),” he said in a public briefing.

Because many lost their jobs due to the pandemic, the number of food shortages in the country increased, resulting in to increase in hunger among Filipinos.
Based on a survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), it appears that six out of every 10 Filipinos or 62.1% of Filipinos experience moderate or severe food insecurity or malnutrition.
The survey was conducted from November 3 to December 3, which also revealed that 71.7% of households buy food through borrowing while 66.3% borrow from relatives or neighbors.
According to the survey, food shortages increased between April and May last year due to the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in which 5,717 households with 7,240 individuals were affected.

The Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) is seeking to produce functional food products with prebiotic properties.

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña announced this on the DOSTv Facebook page on Friday, April 30.
“The DOST-FNRI has started looking into the prebiotic properties of functional food products. The research aims to develop food products with prebiotic properties using locally available raw materials,” he said during his weekly report.

More needs to be done to generate jobs and reduce hunger among Filipinos, Malacañang admitted Friday after a survey showed many families had little or nothing to eat during the coronavirus pandemic.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said the government has taken steps, including providing financial aid, to low income families and displaced workers but recognized that much remained to be implemented.
“Naiintindihan natin talaga na kapag hindi nakapagtrabaho ang mga tao ay talagang ang resulta ay kagutuman (We understand that if people cannot work, the result is hunger),” he said over government television Friday, April 30.
