DVIDS - News - Five Gold Star Families get mortgages paid off through foundation

5 FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Under partly cloudy skies, a warm breeze and the Iron Mike statue appearing as if he was casting a watchful eye over the audience, five Fayetteville, North Carolina Gold Star Families were recognized by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, May 18. The Families of Staff Sgt. Kyu H. Chay, 3rd Special Forces Group; Staff Sgt. Jacob Hess, 95th Civil Affairs Brigade; Sgt. 1st Class Shawn P. McCloskey, 7th Special Forces Group (7th Group was still at Fort Bragg at the time of his death); Sgt. 1st Class Keith Callahan, 82nd Airborne Division; and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Christopher Allgaier, 82nd Aviation Brigade, were presented with documents confirming the mortgages held on their homes were completely satisfied.

Cumberland County Memorial Day observances kick off

Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Spring Lake and other areas will hold events to honor those who died in service to the country.   There are a number of events scheduled over the next few days, some of which will honor fallen service members while others are military-connected.  Here are some of them: Wednesday:   •The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6018 will hold an observance at 6 p.m. at the post, 116 Chance St., in Fayetteville, said Post Commander Edward Beard. Thursday:   • The U.S. Army Special Operations Command will honor soldiers killed while supporting combat operations during 2018, 2019 and 2020 in a ceremony that will be streamed on the command s Facebook page at 10 a.m., according to a news advisory.

Resolution Urges Renaming Base for Edward S. Bragg, Wisconsin Hero MADISON, Wis. – A resolution circulated in the Wisconsin State Senate today by Sen. Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookfield) urges a federal commission to rename Fort Bragg, a U.S. military base in North Carolina to Fort Bragg. Fort Bragg is currently named after a Confederate general, Braxton Bragg. Instead, the resolution proposes changing the man the base honors to his cousin, Union General Edward Stuyvesant Bragg of Wisconsin. While they shared a surname, the two couldn’t have been more different. U.S. General Edward Stuyvesant Bragg, a resident of Wisconsin, volunteered for the Union Army at the outset of the Civil War. With no previous military service, Bragg impressively reached the rank of brigadier general by 1864.
