The Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia straddles an uncomfortable balance between neutral protector and right-wing advocate. Leaders say they put their beliefs aside when protecting people with differing viewpoints. Critics question if that’s realistic. Many militias have come under fire for expressing extremist views. There are 273 active right-wing extreme anti-government militias in America, 12 of which are based in Pennsylvania, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

And sometimes that s needed,” said Christian Yingling, founder of the newly-formed Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia. “Not being scared, but not being brazen either.” Previous to the Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia, Yingling was the leader of one company of the Pennsylvania Light Foot Militia. The Pennsylvania Light Foot Militia is associated with the national Light Foot Militia, which the ACLED classifies as having a low history of and moderate potential for violence.

Hence the term “dual status.” The goal of this legislation was to streamline civil support operations and establish a unified front between the National Guard and active-duty forces.
