Wrestler the first Alaskan to compete in Greco-Roman division at trials
Shungnak wrestler Spencer Woods didn t make the Olympic team at this weekend s U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Texas, but he finished fourth overall and came close to clinching a spot on the national team.
Woods, 22, last Friday became the first Alaskan to wrestle in the Greco-Roman division at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He lost a close quarterfinal-round match in the 87-kilogram (192 pound) weight class and then roared back in Saturday s wrestlebacks.
Woods scored an 8-5 decision in his first consolation-round match and won his consolation semifinal by forfeit. That put him in the third-place bout, where he scored an injury default victory three minutes into the match.

Why Greco Matters

The 2021 US Olympic Team Trials was a very exciting event, bringing all three wrestling styles together in Texas to determine who will compete for the US in Tokyo. Many of us were excited to see the highly anticipated battle between Kyle Dake and Jordan Burroughs, and J Den Cox clash Kyle Snyder in a meeting of 2016 Olympic medalists. 2021 also brought the return of Helen Maroulis to top form. However, how many fans looked forward to the Alejandro Sancho/Ellis Coleman final or G Angelo Hancock taking on young upstart Braxton Amos in Greco? Before the US Olympic Trials, how many casual wrestling fans even knew who these Greco guys were?

Over half a decade later, three-time All American wrestler for Iowa State and future Olympian Kyven Gadson will not only get his ice cream, but it will even be named after him.
Wrestling and ice cream fans alike can join Gadson at ISU Creamery from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday for the debut of ChampionChip Kyven Dough. The Creamery, located on the second floor of the Food Sciences Building, opened after a 50-year hiatus last year and is known for its ISU-inspired flavors.
The former Iowa State wrestler told ESPN in 2015 about his ice cream cravings after winning his first title.
