On November 13, 2020, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer caused an uproar when she signed an executive order that gave Calgary-based
Enbridge (TSX:ENB)(NYSE:ENB) 180 days to shut down its Line 5 pipeline, which ships 540,000 barrels of oil daily through the Great Lake States to Ontario.
Enbridge claims Whitmer has no right to close Line 5. Whitmer said she’d seize Line 5’s profits (reportedly $1.3 million daily) if it doesn’t comply. And as May 12 was the “shutdown deadline,” most of us are wondering what will become of this North American feud.
If you’re new to the issue, or if you’ve been watching from a distance, let’s take a step back. What exactly is Line 5, and why is its closure important to Canadians? Here’s what you need to know.

Blanchester man convicted of 2017 kidnapping to get retrial
Dunn
WILMINGTON A Blanchester man found guilty of kidnapping his neighbor and placing her in a pit in 2017 has been granted a release from prison pending a retrial.
Dennis Dunn, 49, was granted a $10,000 signature recognizance bond by Clinton County Common Pleas Judge John W. “Tim” Rudduck while awaiting a new trial date.
This comes after the court agreed to relieve Dunn’s previous attorney, James Hartke, of his duties and have evidence in the trial stricken from the record in February. A retrial date has not been scheduled as of now.
Court documents indicated Hartke did not provide property access of evidence to the prosecution.
Defense Official: Pentagon Must Reassess JEDI Cloud Stance
‘I can’t comment on the court case and I’m not going to comment on specifically what DOD is going to do but I will say…it is absolutely vital that we are able to move forward on a data-centric approach in the department,’ said Kathleen Hicks, deputy secretary of defense under the Biden administration. Canada asks U.S. courts to stop Michigan from shutting down Line 5 pipeline
The federal government asked the U.S. court to stop Michigan from shutting down the pipeline that supplies fuel to most parts of Ontario and Quebec.
The Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O’Regan today filed court documents against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s attempt to close the pipeline. Whitmer has been giving Calgary-based Enbridge Inc. to close Line 5 until Wednesday-the company said it has no plans to comply.
Oregan said in a statement: “Line 5 is vital to our energy security.”
“This profile supports the ongoing mediation between Enbridge and Michigan, emphasizes that Line 5 is a vital energy and economic link between Canada and the United States, and expresses Canada’s belief that the U.S. Federal Court is The appropriate jurisdiction to hear this case lies between Michigan and Embrich.”
