Mapping the local cosmic web

E-Mail IMAGE: An international team of researchers has produced a map of the dark matter within the local universe, using a model to infer its location due to its gravitational influence on. view more  Credit: Hong et. al., Astrophysical Journal UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. A new map of dark matter in the local universe reveals several previously undiscovered filamentary structures connecting galaxies. The map, developed using machine learning by an international team including a Penn State astrophysicist, could enable studies about the nature of dark matter as well as about the history and future of our local universe. Dark matter is an elusive substance that makes up 80% of the universe. It also provides the skeleton for what cosmologists call the cosmic web, the large-scale structure of the universe that, due to its gravitational influence, dictates the motion of galaxies and other cosmic material. However, the distribution of local dark matter is currently unknown becau

Clean Energy Innovation Business Leaders Push Congress to Boost Cleantech RD&D

, Founder Houston, TX | AquaNRG is an environmental and energy tech company that is pioneering Data Chemistry Physics, a new scientific methodology which uses data-driven methods such as deep learning and machine learning to complement and enhance theoretical modeling based on reactive transport modeling (RTM) principles. AquaNRG offers a SaaS-based model for chemistry-physics informed AI simulation platform and high-performance cloud computing with pay-as-you-go subscription pricing. This technology has applications for the oil and gas sector in prediction and optimization of energy production. AquaNRG has been awarded 3 SBIR grants from the US Department of Energy and National Science Foundation totaling up to $1.4M in funding.

Over 1000 studies using ESO data: a look back at ESO s science results of 2020

20 May 2021 ESO observatories operated under challenging conditions in 2020 due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, having to reduce and even pause scientific observations for a few months. Nonetheless, 2020 was still a very productive year for the observatory with regard to the number of papers that were published using data from ESO telescopes, mostly obtained in previous years. A recently published report from the ESO library shows that 2020 represents the fourth consecutive year that over 1000 scientific studies using ESO data were published. Of the 608 studies carried out using observations from the VLT and VLTI, 336 (55%) used data from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES), or from the X-shooter spectrograph. These were the three most productive VLT instruments in 2020, as was the case in 2019.
