Boxing-DAZN strikes 5-year global deal with Eddie Hearnâs Matchroom By Syndicated Content
Jun 3, 2021 | 8:38 AM
(Reuters) â Sports streaming service DAZN said that it had struck a five-year global deal with boxing promoter Eddie Hearnâs Matchroom stable, after an earlier agreement with Comcastâs Sky to host Hearnâs top fighters expired.
DAZN said it would show at least 16 Matchroom UK fights a year from July exclusively to subscribers in Britain and Ireland, and will also air Matchroom UK bouts to viewers around the world starting on July 31.
âAs we continue Matchroomâs expansion worldwide, this new deal will enable us to further cement DAZN as the unrivalled global home of boxing,â said Hearn, who recently took over from father Barry as chairman of Matchroom.
Billionaires’ European Super League proposal shelved amid mass opposition from football fans
The proposal this week by a group of billionaires to inaugurate a breakaway football European Super League (ESL), rapidly shelved due to protests from fans, is a case study in how capitalism distorts and degrades everything it touches.
Rumours grew last week that a select group of Europe’s richest clubs were set to establish a lucrative new league, after at least three years of discussion. The clubs decided they had not wrested enough financial concessions from European football’s governing body, UEFA, and would no longer play in its premier European club competition, the Champions League.

What are the business implications of the disastrous attempt by six English football clubs, and a few others from Spain and Italy, to break away from their national leagues and set up a European “Super League”?
The Big Six of the Premier League were forced to ditch their plans earlier this week after outrage at what was seen as brazen greed on their part.
In return for one-off payments of between £300 million and £200 million each, the six would have joined the new competition, which was calculated to be a much bigger earner in terms of broadcasting rights revenue than the existing European competitions.
