A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake tore down buildings in central Croatia on Tuesday, striking near the town of Petrinja where rescue teams raced to comb through the rubble.
The tremor, one of the strongest to rock Croatia in recent years, collapsed rooftops in Petrinja, home to some 20,000 people, and left the streets strewn with bricks and other debris.

A powerful earthquake killed at least six people as it tore down buildings in central Croatia on Tuesday, leaving a town near the epicentre without electricity as rescuers combed toppled roofs and rubble in the dark.
The tremors were felt as far afield as Vienna while the damage was concentrated in and around Petrinja, a town some 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Croatia s capital Zagreb.
Among the dead were a young girl in Petrinja and five people in a nearby village, Croatian police said.
As rescue teams shovelled away bricks and other debris, some elderly residents gathered in a park in downtown Petrinja, wrapped in blankets and afraid to return home.

Tucson, Arizona residents near Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and across the city of Tucson are reporting a loud “sonic boom” that happened at 10.44AM local time on Tuesday morning, Dec. 29, 2020.
According to a news report published on Tucson’s KOLD News 13, “People from across Tucson reported hearing a loud boom and the feeling the ground shake around 10:44 am Tuesday, December 29, 2020”.

A search for survivors in Croatia stretched into the night Tuesday after a powerful earthquake killed at least seven people in the country s interior, tearing down rooftops and piling bricks in the streets.
The 6.4-magnitude quake was felt as far afield as Vienna but the heavy damage was concentrated in and around Petrinja, a town of around 20,000 some 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Croatia s capital Zagreb.
Rescue teams shovelled away debris in search of victims as night fell after the mid-day tremor, while the European Union announced that more help was on its way.
