Caldera chronicles: How astrobiology studies in Yellowstone might teach us about life on other planets

Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles is a weekly column written by scientists and collaborators of the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. This week s contribution is from Conor Nixon, research space scientist with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. In 1989, NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft made an incredible discovery — geyser activity on Triton, a moon of Neptune. It was the first time a geyser had been observed away from Earth (not counting the volcanic eruptions discovered on Jupiter’s moon Io by Voyager 1 in 1979). In the decades that followed, geysers were discovered on even more moons in the outer solar system. This two-image mosaic is one of the highest-resolution views acquired by the Cassini spacecraft during its imaging survey of the geyser basin capping the southern hemisphere of Saturn s moon Enceladus.

Pamplin Media Group - Nora returns to the Oregon Zoo

Nora returns to the Oregon Zoo Nora is back at the Oregon Zoo. After spending the past few years at Utah s Hogle Zoo, the 5-year-old polar bear returned to the zoo in Southeast Portland late Tuesday, March 9, even as operators were putting the finishing touches on the new Polar Passage habitat. Seeing Nora this morning was so exciting, said Nicole Nicassio-Hiskey, the zoo s senior marine life keeper, who worked closely with the young bear during her previous time in Portland. She has grown into a beautiful bear. Her coat looks great and she seems very comfortable already she has been taking dips and splashing around.

DNR: destroy your moss balls, but please don t flush them

CHRIS HUBBUCH Wildlife officials are asking aquarium owners to destroy their “moss balls” after invasive zebra mussels were found on some of the ornamental plants. The U.S. Geological Survey warned Monday that the destructive shellfish have been found in pet stores in at least 21 states including Wisconsin. “The issue is that somebody who purchased the moss ball and then disposed of them could end up introducing zebra mussels into an environment where they weren’t present before,” said Wesley Daniel, the USGS biologist who discovered the problem. “We’ve been working with many agencies on boat inspections and gear inspections, but this was not a pathway we’d been aware of until now.”
