When the United States entered World War II in December 1941, it faced a shortage of merchant mariners. With supplies in desperate needs overseas a massive sealift would require not only a huge fleet of cargo ships, but the seafarers to sail them. This opened the door a bit to black mariners for a range of shipboard jobs. One of the most dramatic stories of this era involved shipmaster Hugh Mulzac.
Born in the British West Indies in 1886, Mulzac went to sea after high school, sailing on British vessels. He later attended the Nautical School in Swansea, in the United Kingdom, earning a mate’s license. He sailed as a ship’s officer in World War I, and came to the United States, becoming a citizen in 1918.

COLONIE - John Andonie of Clifton Park, an Iraq war veteran, has been promoted to major general and selected to serve as the deputy director, second in command, of the Army National Guard, which consists of 336,000 soldiers in the 50 states, three territories and the District of Columbia.

Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester has nominated 28 Delaware students for admission to United States service academies for the Class of 2025. Each year, members of the U.S. Congress are charged with nominating top candidates for attendance at four service academies: the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Nominees must then be accepted by the academies to gain admittance.

U.S. Senator Jon Tester recently announced he is nominating 19 Montana students to be admitted to the country’s four prestigious military service academies.
Tester selected these 19 students based on their academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities, and commitment to serving and leading in the United States military. To attend the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, or Merchant Marine Academies, a student must be nominated by a member of Congress.
“It is one of my greatest honors as Montana’s Senior Senator to nominate our state’s best and brightest to the nation’s most prestigious military academies each year,” said Tester. “These young folks have proven they can work hard both in and out of the classroom, have shown promising leadership and teamwork skills and are dedicated to serving their comm
