7-year-old boy killed, others hurt in N.J. house blaze Updated 9:42 AM; A 7-year-old boy was killed Thursday in a fire that ripped through a home in Newark and injured several other residents, authorities said. “There’s one fatality – a young child,” said Kathy Carter, spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating. The fire was reported about 4:50 a.m. in a three-story home on Astor Street, according to Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara. The child’s body was found on the third floor. “(His) father escaped the home through the front door and attempted to re-enter via the roof” from the house next door, O’Hara said.

Firefighters responded to a call of fire at the 3-story home at 65 Astor St., at approximately 4:50 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said. The child’s father escaped the home through the front door and attempted to re-enter via the roof of 67 Astor St.  Two adults and three children were hospitalized. He was removed from the roof by Newark Firefighters via ground ladder. The fire extended to two adjacent residences at 63 and 67 Astor St., both of which suffered minor dire damage through the adjoining wall.

Details about the response to the fire and where inside the house the boy was discovered were not clear. His identity had not been released.
