Newark cops ran into ‘running gunfight’ in police-involved shooting that killed man, union leader says

Plainclothes officers were present when a Newark cop fatally shot a 39-year-old man, minutes into New Year’s Day, Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement on Friday.
The officer has been put on administrative leave, the mayor said, but the cop’s identity was not released by Baraka’s office or authorities investigating the shooting. The victim’s name has also not be released in the shooting that officials said occurred near South 11th Street and Woodland Avenue in Newark’s South Ward.

An East Orange woman was fatally shot Wednesday night in Newark, county officials said.
Charisse L. Ates, 38, was shot on the 100 block of South 8th Street Wednesday night, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said in a statement.
She was taken to University Hospital and pronounced dead around at 9:37 p.m., officials said on Thursday.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office at 877-TIPS-4EC or 877-847-7432.

Charisse Ates of East Orange was killed in a Wednesday night shooting in Newark, authorities said Thursday. She was 38 years old.

2 men arrested in weekend killing of Newark man

Police have arrested two Newark men in connection with the fatal shooting of a city man Sunday, authorities said.
On Monday, police arrested Johaun Cook, 35, and Altariq Sanders, 32, both of Newark, and charged them with multiple crimes, including reckless manslaughter, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said in a statement.
The duo had been sought for the fatal shooting of Sherome Hubbard, 24, also of Newark.
Police found Hubbard shot inside a home on the 200 block of Fairmount Avenue on Sunday, authorities said. He was taken to University Hospital and was pronounced dead at 6:42 p.m. that same day.

Santa’s sleigh got a fancy upgrade Wednesday from the Newark Public Safety Department to help deliver toys to the city’s children: the NPD1 helicopter.
Kriss Kringle helped Newark firefighters and police deliver hundreds of gifts that were donated through Toys for Tots, a program of the United States Marine Corps Reserve that began in 1947. Employees from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office also helped with the operation.
