ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system active in Oregon KATU Staff An earthquake early warning system is now active in Oregon, ready to notify residents of seismic activity.  The USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System came online Thursday, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the magnitude 9.1 Great Tohoku, Japan earthquake, according to the Oregon Office of Emergency Management. In honor of the day, Governor Kate Brown also dubbed March 11 as ShakeAlert Day in Oregon.  Earthquake Detected! Drop, Cover, Hold On. Protect Yourself. ShakeAlert doesn t predict when earthquakes will happen, rather it notifies people when one has already begun. State officials say a test of the system will be conducted later this summer the public will be notified in advance once it is scheduled. 

Earthquake Alert System: USGS announces Pacific Northwest system

Starting March 11, 2021, ShakeAlert-powered earthquake early warning alerts will be available for delivery directly to wireless devices in Oregon. In May 2021, Washington state will follow suit and complete the ShakeAlert public alerting rollout across the entire West Coast. California enabled ShakeAlert-powered alerts in October 2019. As massive slabs of Earth squish into and grind past each other off the coast of the Pacific Northwest, many people may wonder when they will feel ensuing earthquakes, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the USGS cannot predict where and when future earthquakes will occur, the bureau, along with a team of organizations, helped create a system that can provide vital seconds of warning that an earthquake is happening and shaking is imminent.
