Colin Sutherland, 54, a retired Saskatoon educator, was fatally stabbed in his apartment by his girlfriend, Sheritta Kahpeaysewat, over Easter weekend in 2018.(Submitted)
Sheritta Kahpeaysewat, 34, was sentenced on Tuesday to six years in a federal institution for the stabbing death of her partner, 54-year-old retired Saskatoon educator Colin Sutherland, in 2018.
Previously charged with second-degree murder, Kahpeaysewat pleaded guilty to manslaughter last month at Court of Queen s Bench in Saskatoon, arguing she was intoxicated and didn t remember what had happened the day Sutherland died. She had no prior criminal record.
Following victim impact statements from Sutherland s family and a joint submission from the Crown and defence, Justice Gerald Allbright handed Kahpeaysewat a six-year sentence which, after remand credit, leaves her roughly two-and-a-half years left to serve.
