ICSA circle seat on Bord Bia meat and livestock board

The Minister for Agriculture is said to be “actively exploring” the possibility of appointing ICSA to Bord Bia’s meat and livestock board. The development was mooted during Minister Charlie McConalogue’s opening speech at ICSA’s AGM and annual conference, the virtual event was attended by approximately 70 participants. Speaking from his office at Agriculture House the minister said: “I want to inform the ICSA that, following a request by Edmond Phelan, I am actively exploring the options available to me to place the ICSA on the meat and livestock board of Bord Bia. Straw scheme divides opinion

The €10m straw incorporation scheme is dividing opinion among those affected. While tillage farmers are welcoming the scheme, livestock farmers, mushroom growers and compost manufacturers and farm contractors are all predicting negative effects for their sectors. While the details of the scheme have yet to be finalised, its shape is becoming clear. Firstly, as reported last week, farmers will receive €250/ha to chop and incorporate their straw. Farmers will apply by nominating plots of land containing cereal crops for the scheme as part of their BPS application. Application must be on a whole-plot basis, but farmers who wish to chop part of a field, for instance the headlands, can do so by sub-dividing an existing plot.

Longford Leader Farming: Brexit Fund must go directly to farmers

Longford Leader Farming: Brexit Fund must go directly to farmers Reporter:   ); IFA President Tim Cullinan said the announcement that Ireland will receive over €1bn, or 25%, from the EU Brexit fund in 2021 is clear recognition that we are most exposed to the fallout from Brexit. The Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney confirmed the funding at the AGM of the North Tipperary County Executive last night. Tim Cullinan said when it comes to allocating the funding, the impact on the agri-food sector will have to be central to any decisions. “We will be making a strong case for funding to go directly to farmers who will take the brunt of any fallout from currency fluctuations and trade and logistical issues that will arise once the deal reached before Christmas works its way through the system,” he said.
