Edmonds Arts Commission announces 2021 one-time grant awards Posted: March 10, 2021 380 In response to the negative impact of the pandemic on the arts in Edmonds, the City of Edmonds Arts Commission has funded one-time grants for Edmonds-based non-profit arts organizations and artists in the 2021 budget. According to a city announcement, the purpose of this new grant program was “to help build and reinforce a diverse, accessible and equitable cultural community in Edmonds, recognizing the uncertainty and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the necessity of changing strategies to create access for all to the arts.”  Seeking to support creativity, diversity and inclusive access to arts in the community, two categories of grants were offered: small grants of up to $1,000 for individual artists and other smaller organizations, and large grants of up to $10,000, which required a local nonprofit or a partnership with one for eligibility. 

Edmonds Diversity Film Series resumes Feb 21 with virtual screening of Outside the House

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: February 18, 2021 569 After two successful virtual screenings in October and November of 2020, the Edmonds Diversity Film Series resumes its fourth season this month, with the next screening scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. via Zoom. Screenings will be offered free to the public and are scheduled for the third Sundays of the month, February through May. Each screening presents a film, or films, related to different topics or groups representing diverse populations and experiences. After each screening there is a brief opportunity for comment and dialogue. And due to the virtual platform, we are fortunate that several of the films’ producers, writers and/or actors will be able to join the Zoom for the comment and question periods.

This year’s event, Discover Your Passion, will be presented virtually. The event, which is great for kids from ages 5 to 12, will be online and free of charge through the generosity of orchestra donors and patrons. The top entries from Cascade Symphony Orchestra’s Rising Star competition will be introduced at the event. They are 15-year-old cellist William Miguel Johnson of Issaquah, 9-year-old pianist Jimmy Huang of Woodway and 14-year-old flutist Joseph Jeon of Mukilteo. Johnson, who is the winner of the competition, will perform the Gigue from Cello Suite No. 3, BWV 1009, by composer Johann Sebastian Bach. MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: January 27, 2021 Luke Distelhorst Edmonds City Councilmember Luke Distelhorst on Wednesday announced his campaign to retain his Position 2 seat, to which he was appointed in January 2020. “When my council position began I could not ever have imagined how quickly our world would change,” he said. “Responding to the pandemic and keeping Edmonds residents safe and healthy became my primary focus. My heart goes out to the families, friends and neighbors who have lost loved ones, jobs, and are experiencing overwhelming hardship due to COVID-19.” In response to the emergency, Distelhorst noted he authored a residential eviction moratorium and the Housing and Relief Program that eventually distributed $580,000 to Edmonds residents. Representing the council on the city’s Recovery Task Force kept Distelhorst involved in tackling community health and safety issues and navigating how to best support the unique small businesses located throughout Edmond
