I am concerned about the recent City Commission vote to allow public drinking. I have worked in the field of substance abuse treatment in Gainesville since the early 1990s. I am a huge proponent of responsible drinking by those able to drink moderately. However, there are individuals, through no fault of their own, who are incapable of moderate drinking.   Alcohol use disorders usually begin in early adulthood, while the prefrontal cortex is not yet matured. Young people at risk for these disorders are genetically predisposed to substance use issues, and have no idea that by drinking they are opening up a gateway to a potentially life-threatening situation.
