Opposition Senator Francis N. Pangilinan on Tuesday called for the resumption of peace negotiations between the government and communist rebels.
Pangilinan, president of the Liberal Party (LP), said genuine and lasting peace remains the best option rather than violence.
He maintained that peace and prosperity would address the root problems of insurgency and usher in sustainable development, especially in the countryside.
The President formally ended peace talks with the National Democratic Front (NDF) in 2017 after on-and-off negotiations.
“We hope the doves in the Cabinet would prevail to bring to fore the need for genuine peace as paramount and must be pursued right away,” Pangilinan said.

Opposition Senator Francis ‘’Kiko’’ Pangilinan on Wednesday asked whether Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque is drawing salary from China.
Pangilinan said the reason he asked this was because Roque sides with China, particularly on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue.
The opposition lawmaker cited a Roque statement that Julian Felipe Reef is not part of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Philippines and that critics made an issue on the presence of more than 200 Chinese vessels in the reef.
Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said DFA has ‘’exclusive remit’’ on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue and that only the DFA could speak for President Duterte on foreign affairs matters.

Opposition Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan on Wednesday reiterated his proposal to use local PPEs (personal protective equipment) and other coronavirus disease (C0VID-19) -related needs for the country’s overall economic recovery.
“Pagkakataon ang krisis. Crisis is opportunity. Makaka-recover tayo economically, magkakaroon ng trabaho ang marami kung gagamitin natin ang gawa ng sarili nating mga kababayan (We can recover economically, there will be jobs for many workers if we use locally-made products),” Pangilinan said in reaction to reports that 3,500 workers of local PPE manufacturers have been laid off due to lack of demand.
Pangilinan is the author of Senate Bill 1759, or the Pandemic Protection Act.
