Imbert denies Mark’s claims on tax breaks for energy firm, apts
Colm Imbert -
FINANCE Minister Colm Imbert at a virtual briefing on Friday rejected allegations by Opposition Senator Wade Mark of any improper benefits from tax-breaks in the recent Finance Bill 2020 which enacts measures in the national budget.
Mark had alleged a clean energy firm would questionably get a hefty tax break in getting listed on the TT Stock Exchange, while Imbert as an apartment builder would benefit from a tax break for first-time house buyers.
The senator had said MPC Caribbean Clean Energy Ltd was a German solar/wind energy firm with a facility in Costa Rica, for whom Ansa McAl was a co-investor.
GOVERNMENT wants to appoint retired permanent secretary Vishnu Dhanpaul as Governor of the Central Bank, Opposition Senator Wade Mark said on Tuesday.
He was speaking on a motion on the adjournment which dealt with the increase in tariffs on imported pasta.
Mark said the PNM Government and its allies were all about control.
âThey want to control the Central Bank by appointing former Permanent Secretary (in the Ministry of Finance) Vishnu Dhanpaul as the next Governor of the Central Bank. That is what they want to do. So that the Minister of Finance will have effective control over monetary and fiscal policy,â Mark said, before being stopped by the Senate President for going outside of the topic of the motion.
Rambharat: We can’t recover $$m from defaulting scholars
Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat. -
WHILE TT is owed $26 million by defaulting national scholars, the State is now statute-barred from taking legal action against about half of these beneficiaries, Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat told the Senate on Tuesday.
He was replying to a listed question from Opposition Senator Wade Mark as to what steps were being taken to ensure the repayment of these funds, whose existence was disclosed in the 2019 Auditor General’s Report on the Public Accounts.
Rambharat said a scholar must serve TT for a period determined by the amount of funds he or she receives.

Mark: ‘Rich man’s bill’ favours wind/solar company
Oppsition senator Wade Mark
WHILE Finance Minister Colm Imbert had touted measures in the Finance Bill 2020 aimed at helping hundreds of thousands of ordinary people gain $3,000 in an annual tax allowance, Opposition Senator Wade Mark called it “a rich man’s paradise.”
He lamented tax breaks aimed at a German clean energy firm in which local conglomerate Ansa McAl has invested.
Mark dubbed the bill ad-hominem legislation, that is, a law aimed at a specific person/entity, referring to the wind and solar energy company.
The bill, he said, was “extremely disturbing, worrying, troubling and concerning.”
