While the injected capital—mainly to finance infrastructure— produced impressive economic growth, the model was heavily reliant on debt. While similar projects elsewhere have since been built and expanded beyond their original corridors, the Lagos light rail has suffered neglect after 17 years of failed promises. Again, apart from the accountability issue raised in connection with the discrepancies in the funding costs, the failure of the government to complete the rail project in almost two decades has had negative effects on the socio-economic life of Lagos residents.
