Inquest ordered, foreigners released following New Year s death

Three foreigners who were detained following the death of a man on New Year’s Day, have been released after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard SC, ordered an inquest, the Police Service has confirmed. The three suspects, ages 49, 24, and 20 years, who live in Macoya, were detained immediately following the death of Aarif Mohammed, which occurred on January 1st in Tunapuna. Around 10:25pm on Friday 1st January 2021, police officers responded to a report of an altercation in progress at Lot No. 148 Macoya Extension Road, Tunapuna.  On arrival, they interviewed several persons. Police officers observed Aarif Mohammed, clad in a grey jersey and blue long pants lying on the ground in a pool of blood.  Police officers noted that both his hands and feet were tied, and he was unresponsive but showed signs of life.

Investigators said Mohammed went to the house armed with a cutlass but was confronted by three of the woman s male relatives, all Venezuelan nationals.

Onika Charles injured her foot during training to become a fire officer in Tobago. When 26-year-old Onika Charles of Crown Point began training to become of a firefighter with the T&T Fire Service (TTFS) in 2019, she never imagined that she would spend the next 20 months experiencing constant pain, neglect, mounting debt, and loss. Onika claimed after being injured at the TTFS dormitory, what she termed as negligence by the doctors at the Scarborough General Hospital has now placed her in constant pain, from a wound that has never healed due to an infection. Charles said she now requires specialist surgery to save her foot, yet pleas for assistance from authorities in Tobago have all fallen on deaf ears.

Newly-wed woman dies in crash

ON the eve of Christmas, two women lost their lives in separate road traffic accidents on Thursday in San Juan and Cunupia. One of the women was a newly-wed, while the identity of the other was not released by police up to yesterday evening. Officers said around 3.30 p.m. on Thursday, 29-year-old Karen Elgin was in the front passenger seat of a Nissan Tiida car driven by her husband, along Saddle Road, San Juan, when the car came into contact with another vehicle. Eljin, 29, of Lloyd Street, Sunshine Avenue, Bagatelle, San Juan, and her husband had only recently been married.
