Through a consortium of Department of Energy national laboratories, Oak Ridge National Laboratory scientists are applying their expertise to provide solutions that enable the commercialization of emission-free hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty vehicles, or HDV. As a viable alternative to internal combustion engines powered by gasoline, hydrogen fuel cells can provide sustainable, clean energy with a comparable user experience.
“Adoption of hydrogen technology in the HDV market could prove to be the breakthrough launching widespread use,” said ORNL’s David Cullen, a scientist in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences who studies fuel cell catalysts and electrode structures using advanced microscopy and
DOE Issues $162 Million in Funding to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Vehicles

The US Department of Energy (DOE) today unveiled two funding opportunities totaling more than $162 million to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions among cars, trucks, and off-road vehicles. The funding will support the next stage of the SuperTruck initiatives, which is aimed at electrifying freight trucking, along with efforts to expand electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and lower emissions for on- and off-road vehicles.
As Environment + Energy Leader recently reported, building a clean energy economy to address the climate crisis is a top priority of the Biden Administration, and the transportation sector will play a critical part in the effort. Transportation accounts for approximately 30% of total US energy needs and generates the largest share of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. DOE’s new funding seeks to address the two largest contributors to transportation
