More new faces than incumbents after El Paso school board elections

View Comments There will be more new faces than incumbents on the El Paso and Socorro school boards following Saturday s election results. At El Paso Independent School District, District 3 trustee Josh Acevedo was the only incumbent to win re-election. Former District 1 trustee and board president Bob Geske and District 5 trustee Chuck Taylor did not to seek re-election. District 4 incumbent Diane Dye was decisively defeated by newcomer Isabel Hernandez, unofficial results showed the two-term trustee with less than 10% of the vote in the six-way race. Hernandez, who had more than 57% of the vote, was one of four EPISD candidates to receive campaign contributions from the Kids First political action committee, which has historically supported charter schools.

EPISD board delays setting timeline for finding next superintendent

View Comments The EPISD board of trustees will delay parts of the superintendent search process to give new members a chance to adjust after the district s trustee election this weekend. With four out of seven trustees up for reelection in the May general election on Saturday, and two incumbents not running to keep their seats, new board members will help make decisions about the superintendent search. Because 17 candidates are running in the El Paso Independent School District election, a runoff is likely for at least some of the races, meaning some new members might not be installed until July. The board unanimously voted to begin an internal and external written survey process in the interim, and once new board members are seated, the new board will reconvene to set a timeline for the superintendent search and appoint members of a committee to begin community outreach efforts.

Final El Paso early voting statistics show low voter turnout

View Comments As of Tuesday, the final day of early voting, 2.24% of registered voters had cast their ballots, according to early voting statistics for El Paso’s May general election. There were 3,122 ballots mailed out and 2,051 ballots returned. Combined with the daily total of 2,819 as of April 27, this adds up to 4,870 total votes cast out of 217,404 registered voters in El Paso County. The highest turnout of early votes as of April 27 were cast at Grandview Park Senior Citizen Center, with 374 votes cast; Chayo Apodaca Community Center, with 340; and Arlington Park Shelter, with 286. The outcome of the May election will determine who will fill more than half of trustee seats on the El Paso Independent School District s school board, as well as the Socorro ISD s school board.
