STD rates in El Paso fell in 2020, but health officials said they believe hesitancy and delay in seeking medical care during the pandemic was the reason for lower reported number of infections. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that annual cases of STDs in the U.S. were on the rise for six consecutive years and reached an all-time high in 2019 with 2.5 million reported cases of the three most commonly reported STDs syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia.
People who have been infected can be asymptomatic carriers, especially in the instance of an infection from chlamydia.
If left untreated, STDs can cause serious health issues such as infertility, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, severe pregnancy, newborn complications, infant death or even increase the risk of HIV infection.
