Five months ahead of the next Friday the 13th, Norfolk County is telling bikers not to come to Port Dover for the traditional rally.

“Fight Climate Change with Sun, Wind, Water & Nuclear Energy,” a two-part mini-course offered by the Northwestern Emeriti Organization (NEO) in collaboration with Evanston Public Library, will take place at 7 p.m. on March 9 and 16.
The course, taught by Professor emeritus Elmer Lewis, former chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, will focus on discussing strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel use and finding ways to utilize renewable energy sources on a larger scale.

An important era in the modern history of the Northern Neck came to a close last month with the death in Venice, Fla., of Elmer Lewis “Pete” Green.
Pete was the last surviving Virginia waterman who was involved in the Oyster Wars of the 1950s. He was a native of Colonial Beach, where he was born in 1929, and lived there until retiring and moving to Florida in 1994. For much of his career, he was employed in King George County at the Naval Surface Weapons Laboratory in Dahlgren.
As a young man in his 20s, he crabbed and oystered on the Potomac River, along with many of the other young men of his generation. The state line between Maryland and Virginia being the low tide mark along the Virginia shore meant that Northern Neck oystermen were making their living off of Maryland waters.
BOLIVIA Mr. Andrew Taft Lewis Jr., 88, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020.
He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who served during World War II. Andrew was a hardworking gentleman who loved his family. As a teenager, he worked alongside his father on their farm raising tobacco and vegetables. He later worked at several of the local ports as a longshoreman. He loved cattle and enjoyed raising them on his own farm. Andrew was a member of several organizations throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew T. and Lucy Garner Lewis; wife, Joyce Lewis; daughter, Sylvia Hewett; sister, Gertrude L. Williams; and brother, Elmer Lewis.
