DULUTH – The encroaching wildfires from Canada continue to threaten the borders of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and worsen air quality throughout the state.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency on Tuesday extended its air quality alert to most of the state through Thursday morning.
Heavy smoke from several wildfires in Ontario and Manitoba traveled into northern Minnesota overnight, and its fine particle levels are ranked very unhealthy for everyone across north central Minnesota, the agency said in a news release.

Hennepin County doubles down on vaccine incentive program
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) â Minnesotaâs most populous county is boosting its incentive program for COVID-19 vaccine shots. The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved an additional $250,000 to promote vaccine shots, on top of the original $100,000 that was allocated earlier from federal recovery funds. Commissioner Chris LaTondresse says the program has increased the number of shots and Tuesdayâs action âdoubles down on this promising strategyâ to help fight the coronavirus. The county used the original investment to buy 2,235 Visa gift cards worth $50 each. The incentive program includes partnerships with community groups to host vaccine events and provide perks such as free meals, groceries, and entertainment.
Heavy smoke from Canadian wildfires has prompted the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to expand an air quality alert originally for northern Minnesota to much of the state. The current alert expires at 6 a.m. Thursday.
Areas under the alert include Hibbing, International Falls, Roseau, Bemidji, East Grand Forks, Moorhead, Brainerd, St. Cloud, Rochester, Mankato, the Twin Cities and the tribal areas of Leech Lake, Red Lake, Fond du Lac, Mille Lacs, Upper Sioux and Prairie Island.
Fine particle levels are expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as people who have asthma or other breathing conditions, during this time, the MPCA said. The smoke will remain over the region through Wednesday. when winds push the smoke north and out of Minnesota, the agency said.
