Croatia and Greece are among European Union nations most involved in brutal tactics to stop asylum seekers from reaching the continent, the Guardian newspaper said on Wednesday, citing reports by UN agencies and data from NGOs.
European countries, backed by EU border agency Frontex, have systematically pushed back refugees in their thousands, including children fleeing from wars, in one of the biggest mass expulsions in decades, the Guardian reported. The illegal tactics, also employed by Italy, Spain and Malta, included assault and brutality during detention or transportation, it said.
Croatia stepped up violence and pushbacks of migrants to Bosnia last year. Nearly 18,000 were repelled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Guardian said, citing the Danish Refugee Council (DRC). Referring to refugee testimonies, the newspaper said migrants had been whipped, robbed, sexually abused, and stripped naked by

Blunt human rights abuse persist at land and at sea in Greece. Brutal pushbacks by Greek officials in the past days were reported from the Evros region and off Lesvos. Mare Liberum reports about 55 pushback cases in the Aegean, affecting a total of 1,479 people in the first three months of the year. Meanwhile, the Greek coast guard received new equipment and praise from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The situation for recognised refugees in Greece has further deteriorated and dozens of people ended up on the streets after an informal camp was dismantled in Rhodes. A new report highlights the systematic exclusion of refugee children from the education system across Greece.

Croatian police are investigating reports that an Afghan woman was sexually harassed at the country’s border with Bosnia-Herzegovina in the middle of February. She says she was held at knife-point and asked to strip naked whilst being touched by officers.
The accusations, gathered by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and reported by the
Guardian newspaper on April 7, were described by DRC’s country director in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH), Nicola Bay, as truly horrifying.
Bay said to the news agency
Associated Press (AP) that the unnamed Afghan woman had alleged repeated incidents of sexual abuse during a pushback from Croatia to Bosnia-Herzgovina.

A woman from Afghanistan was allegedly sexually abused, held at knifepoint and forced to strip naked by a Croatian border police officer, during a search of a group of migrants on the border with Bosnia.
The European commission described it as a “serious alleged criminal action’’ and urged the Croatian authorities “to thoroughly investigate all allegations, and follow up with relevant actions”.
According to a dossier from the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), the incident occurred on the night of 15 February, in Croatian territory, a few kilometres from the Bosnian city of Velika Kladuša.
