• No 101 Dalmatians love is necessary to enjoy Cruella, available to rent on Disney+ starting Friday. This live-action movie starring Emma Stone and directed by Craig Gillespie ( I, Tonya ) is, at best, very loosely related to the 1961 animated film (or the 1996 live action pic with Glenn Close for that matter). Instead this is a part punk, part camp origin story set in 1970s London about a girl who has dreams of designing high fashion and gets a shot from Emma Thompson s slightly sadistic Baroness.

• After a bit of a hiatus from action films, Angelina Jolie is back in the thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead as a Montana smoke jumper who comes across a 12-year-old boy (Finn Little) on the run and in need of help. Director Taylor Sheridan, the Oscar-nominated writer of Hell or High Water and co-creator of the TV series Yellowstone, told the AP that the film was very on-brand for him and his proclivity for stories about vengeance and the American West. Available Friday on HBO Max for 31 days, Those Who Wish Me Dead co-stars Nicholas Hoult, Jon Bernthal and Tyler Perry.

• Against the odds, Plainfield native Melissa McCarthy and her husband, filmmaker Ben Falcone, have managed to put out two movies during the pandemic. Last November came HBO Max s Superintelligence, about a regular woman (McCarthy) joined with a megalomaniacal artificial intelligence (voiced by James Corden). This time, in Thunder Force, McCarthy is again thrust into saving the planet. In the Netflix film, McCarthy and Octavia Spencer play women given superpowers accidentally in the case of McCarthy s character to defend Chicago from supervillains (Bobby Cannavale, Jason Bateman). It debuts Friday.
