EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Gary White waits for his lunch at Evansville’s Salvation Army again, in his wheelchair, how you saw him in our story Friday, and how others see him every day.
On Monday, however, he got a new electric wheelchair.
“He’s going to have such an easier time getting here and getting home,” said social work coordinator Jada Smith. “We called him this morning to tell him we have one that’s here donated. I told him to get here at 11 a.m., he got here at like 9:45.”

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Gary White waits for his lunch every day outside of Evansville’s Salvation Army.
14 News asked the 78 year old how he gets there each day.
“I do it myself,” White said.
He lives a short distance from the Salvation Army, but having to wheel himself there turns it into a 20-minute trip.
“I’d like a scooter instead of a chair,” White said. “I live over here about a block and I have to cross Fulton (Avenue) to get over here and it’s dangerous.”

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The Salvation Army is gearing up to feed local families, but they need the community’s help.
Their goal is to raise $60,000 on Friday.
This money will help The Salvation Army stock the shelves of their food pantry and fund the soup kitchen, which is especially important after a year like we’ve had.
In 2020, The Salvation Army says they served over 580,000 meals in the Evansville region. Over 12,000 boxes of food were packed up for families during five different drives through food pantry events.

TRI-STATE (WFIE) - President Joe Biden signed a nearly $2 trillion COVID-19 relief measure this week.
The American Rescue Plan Act promises to provide a significant financial boost to millions of American families.
By this point, several have likely heard about the much-anticipated stimulus checks, or perhaps the enhanced unemployment benefits, but there is another key area.
This relief package also includes updates to the “child tax credit.”
