Dr David Smith Announces $1,000 Stipend for All EVSC Employees

One group of people that have been affected, perhaps a bit more than others during the pandemic is our educators. Teachers have been forced to learn an entirely new way of teaching. Teachers and students were forced from the comfort zone of the classroom to a completely foreign learning environment - the living room. Think about it for a minute - having to abandon everything you ve done for years, even decades, to teach young people, and having to learn new methods and new technology. Hoosier students and staff sent home just two days later. “That was kind of our last calendar day that all of us had,” says Highland Elementary School Assistant Principal Kelly York. March 13 marked the first day of a year-long effort by the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation to teach during a global pandemic. A pandemic many people thought would pass in a matter of weeks.

COVID-19 vaccines: Hoosier teachers beginning to sign at select sites

This week may be the beginning of another new first-shot vaccination push propelling Vanderburgh and other Indiana counties closer to herd immunity. Teachers of any age are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Indiana through a federal initiative aimed at getting at least a first dose into the arm of every teacher, school employee and child care worker by the end of the month. President Joe Biden challenged states to meet that goal on Tuesday. Even though Indiana has only opened eligibility to residents age 50 and older, Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Wednesday that all teachers would be able to make appointments and get vaccinated through pharmacies participating in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. The federal government has directed those pharmacies to prioritize teachers, school employees and child care workers.
