Khrushchev s metaphor, coarse as it may be, provides a vivid and memorable starting point for thinking about the German capital, which, after being ravaged by aerial bombardments and brutal street battles in the final months of World War II, was destined to serve as the nexus of yet another conflict that would continue to dominate the lives of Berliners for a large part of the 20th century.

Captain Sir Tom Moore, the World War 2 veteran who raised over £30million for the NHS amid the coronavirus pandemic, passed away after he was taken to Bedford Hospital when he developed COVID-19 symptoms. He inspired a nation following his heroics efforts walking 100 laps of his garden by his 100th birthday on Friday April 30 last year. Thanks to his efforts Captain Tom was given the official title of Colonel, and would later go on to earn a knighthood.

Premium Content Captain Sir Tom Moore, the 100-year-old hero of Britain s pandemic who inspired the world with his $57 million fundraiser, is in hospital battling COVID-19. Prayers were being poured out across the UK for the Second World War veteran, who raised the incredible sum by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday during last year s lockdown. His determination even caught the eye of the Queen, who gave him a knighthood in the grounds of Windsor Castle in what was one of the most poignant moments of the pandemic. The socially distanced outdoor ceremony in July 2020 was the Queen s first public event since the outbreak began.

Tributes have been paid to a 96 year old D-Day veteran and holder of the Legion d’Honneur who lived in St Albans for almost half a century.
Leonard John Davidge, known as Len, was born in Eastbourne in 1924, but moved to St Albans as a small child.
His father worked in the city as a printer s compositor - perhaps even for the Herts Ad - and Len went to school locally.
When he left school he worked as a messenger for a printing company in St Albans, and when the Second World War broke out, Len was anxious to do his bit.
