Our Crisis Christmas - Palisades Hudson Financial Group

Our Crisis Christmas Father Christmas hands out toys and games to evacuee children in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire in December 1941. Photo by Richard Stone, courtesy the Imperial War Museums. Kriss Kringle, in his many magical guises, will need to put in some serious overtime tonight to spread cheer across a globe that has not seen such widespread desperation in generations. From kindergartners whose schooling has been disrupted to elders who have spent months in prison-like isolation, nobody is likely to forget this holiday season. Oldsters might compare this Christmas Eve to the ones they experienced during World War II, and especially the singularly nightmarish December of 1941. The rest of us, from graying baby boomers to their grandchildren, may come to know this as the Crisis Christmas.

Carols, ration books and bomb shelters: how Britain celebrated Christmas in 1940

At Christmas 1939, Britons had been able to maintain a semblance of normality. The blackout prevented displays of lighted Christmas trees in front windows, but there was no rationing and Britain’s key ally, France, remained unconquered behind the allegedly impregnable Maginot Line. Following the fall of France, the evacuation at Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain, Christmas 1940 was much bleaker – the first real wartime Christmas. It took place in the middle of the Blitz. In December, the Luftwaffe attacked Southampton, Bristol, Sheffield and Leicester. Manchester took heavy pounding on the night of December 22/23 and again on Christmas Eve. Rationing was beginning to bite hard as the German occupation of Europe and blockade by U-boats cut off important sources of supply.
