Observers and experts refuted foreign media reports hyping complaints from the expat finance community in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) about the government s quarantine measures amid the city s latest COVID-19 outbreak, saying the policies are necessary to protect Hong Kong residents and the city s economic recovery.
Thursday s decision by China s top legislature to improve the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region s electoral system will help the city end protracted political chaos and regain momentum to seek greater development, said representatives from a cross-section of Hong Kong society.
The decision by the National People s Congress, passed overwhelmingly by deputies on the final day of this year s session, concretely stipulates the changes to the special administrative region s Election Committee, which chooses the SAR s chief executive, as well as the method of election of the city s legislators.
The decision received firm support from the Hong Kong SAR government and Hong Kong-based central government bodies.
