Bonin Defends Westside Homeless Housing Proposals

(Shutterstock / Matt Gush) LOS ANGELE, CA In a message to constituents, Los Angeles Councilman Mike Bonin Wednesday defended his effort to explore housing homeless people in temporary cabins or camping sites in certain westside parks and beach parking lots. These are not encampments. They are an emergency response an alternative to encampments, and they are temporary solutions meant to get people off the streets and into homes, Bonin wrote in an email to constituents. Candidates for the Westchester/Playa del Rey Neighborhood Council plan to hold a virtual Meet the Candidates event Wednesday night, and some residents plan to speak out against Bonin s proposal, saying it is permitting homeless to camp in L.A. s parks where children go, according to an email by Westchester resident Erik Laykin.

(Nicole Charky/Patch) VENICE, CA The Los Angeles City Council Homelessness & Poverty Committee passed a motion Thursday morning to evaluate site feasibility and identify funding for potential projects at various Westside locations and help fight homelessness. Several different interventions and projects were proposed by Los Angeles City Councilmember Mike Bonin, who represents District 11 and the communities of Venice, Mar Vista, Playa Vista, Westchester, Ladera, Del Rey, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and West Los Angeles/Sawtelle. Bonin has proposed to add more homeless shelters, including tiny homes and safe camping sites in areas such as Los Angeles International Airport, Marina del Rey and Pacific Palisades. He submitted a motion March 31, calling on the city to push to end homelessness and sidewalk encampments.

Crews with Sully-Miller Contracting Co. removed about 7,000 feet of the runway s asphalt surface, as well as on Taxiways H6 and H7. They also installed new energy-efficient LED runway centerline lights and replaced the runway concrete approach slabs at the bridge over Sepulveda Boulevard. “Los Angeles World Airports is working constantly to find efficiencies in our modernization and maintenance, and the rapid rehabilitation of Runway 7R/25L shows our capability to work smarter, while minimizing impacts on airport operations, said Bernardo Gogna, chief development officer for the airport.
