Athens-Clarke County continues to trend behind Georgia s COVID-19 vaccination rate as one in five residents are fully vaccinated.
Twenty percent of residents or 25,826 people in the county are considered fully vaccinated, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. To be fully vaccinated, the resident must have had both shots of the vaccine from either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna or the one-dose Johnson and Johnson Jannesen vaccine.
For those receiving a two-dose vaccine, 24% of Clarke residents have received at least one dose.
The data reported by DPH is recorded by a person s county of residence, provided at vaccination appointment. When a provider in Georgia administers a vaccine, it is recorded through GRITs or the Georgia Registry for Immunization Transactions and Services.

An Oglethorpe County sheriff’s deputy was charged Thursday with two counts of aggravated assault after authorities said he shot at a car that fled from a traffic stop in Athens-Clarke County.
Michael Norton Davis, 35, of Colbert was fired after an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation requested by Athens-Clarke police, which had jurisdiction in the matter. No one was wounded in the shooting, police said.
Davis had worked as an Oglethorpe deputy since 2017, according to the sheriff’s office.
The GBI said Davis attempted to stop the car about 4:30 p.m. Monday for speeding on U.S. Highway 78 in Oglethorpe County. The driver, Patrouski Hodges, 27, of Athens stopped along the highway after entering Clarke County, according to the report.
Williams noted there could be an issue with tracking some inmates for a second dose if they had been released from jail.
“We could use a different vaccine, but we still have a week and half to go and a lot of things could change. We’ll see what happens and if it’s the best practice to not give it, then we’ll look at another version,” the sheriff said.
The jail was able to access the J&J vaccine through Innovation Health of Athens, according to Williams. As of Monday, almost 100 of the approximately 300 inmates had offered to take the vaccine, he said.
