Etowah sheriff s office buys gun safes to secure long guns on campus

Etowah County school resource officers will have additional weapons safely stored at closer reach after the sheriff s office purchased 15 gun safes for SRO offices. Sheriff Jonathon Horton said the purchases will allow the officers to have a long gun secured in a gun safe inside the school, should a threat present itself. School resource officers are trained to go toward the threat, Horton said in a press release. If the SRO needs his/her long gun, they are at a severe disadvantage by it being outside in the vehicle. There are disadvantages as well with such a weapon being outside in a vehicle even when it is locked away, Horton said because of the possibility of theft. With the gun safes, the weapon will be where the deputy is, keeping both the gun and the school population safer.
