DULUTH, Minn. – Zeitgeist’s Winter Bike Week has begun. As part of the festivities, Northlanders were able to come to Continental Ski and Bik today for free bike tune-ups and take-home treats. There was also a kids helmet giveaway through Safe Kids Northeast Minnesota.
“Gearing it towards people who aren’t necessarily always biking throughout the winter and making it a little bit more accessible and kind of helping people learn what they need and what they can do to make biking in the winter more easy and doable for their day-to-day lives,” said Stevie Twining, the community development coordinator for Americorps.

Crews have already started to clear snow around the area.
Blue boxes have also been placed around town in preparation for the arrival of more than two dozen ice sculptures.
An organizer told us it’s difficult to plan an event like this during the pandemic, but she’s happy the event can go on for locals.
“It was really wonderful we could have something to do outdoors and distance to allow people to get out here and enjoy. We encouraging social distancing we will be handing out masks,” said Nikky Farmakes, the organizer of the festival. “We are following CDC and Douglas County health guidelines.”

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, I took a quick drive down to Barker s Island in Superior at least it was supposed to be quick.
My thought was to look for any prep work for the upcoming Lake Superior Ice Festival or even someone ice fishing. But as I was turning around in the Barkers Island Inn parking lot, I noticed two somethings running across the frozen Superior Bay. At first I thought a couple dogs got loose, but soon realized it was a pair of foxes.
