LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - One local COVID-19 survivor was recently released after spending weeks in the hospital fighting for his life.
Don Simon spent 46 days at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital fighting the deadly virus, but Wednesday morning, he finally got to go home.
“Covid is real, it’s not a joke,” said Don Simon.
Simon’s family was overjoyed with emotions as he wheeled out of the hospital doors. They even rented out a limo for him to ride home in.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness month - a kind of cancer diagnosis thatâs now seeming to affect even young people. Actor Chadwick Boseman lost his battle to colon cancer at just 43 years old.
Gastroenterologist from Lake Charles Memorial Hospital Dr. Eric Fontenot hosted a seminar live on Facebook bringing awareness to colon cancer, especially in young people.
âWe have multiple societies in this country who have recommended - firmly recommended - 45 is the age that we start colon cancer screening. Now, that being said, we just had to talk about how colon cancer is occurring in younger and younger ages, sometimes patients who are in their 20s and 30s.â

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) -After hearing from some residents, it seems to be just one thing after another. From rolling blackouts, yesterday to now a depleted water supply for nearly 6,000 residents in Calcasieu Parish.
Water access is a major problem for Lake Area residents following this brutal winter storm.
Lake Charles city officials said the city’s 6 water plants are producing double what its winter output usually is around this time of year. In all, they’re outputting 18 million gallons a day.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The COVID-19 vaccine is being given around the country, with the goal of returning to normalcy.
But for one nurse, her vaccine appointment felt like a return to the classroom.
“Seeing those students out there that are now RN’s, and that’s what it’s all about,” said Dr. Ginger Basone, an RN and part-time RN instructor at SOWELA.
Dr. Basone, a former professor at McNeese has seen hundreds of students come and go during her 15-year career, but she never forgets them.
