New traveler responsibility pledge educates visitors about taking care of the SIerra

To protect and preserve vulnerable ecosystems and residential communities, regional visitor bureaus have joined forces to focus on educational tactics that reinforce the importance of mindful, responsible travel. To encourage stewardship and offer specific actions that visitors can take to help protect Lake Tahoe, surrounding communities, wildlife and the environment, a new Traveler Responsibility Pledge will be introduced this spring. Composed of six tenets that align with primary sustainability initiatives of the region, the pledge outlines actions visitors and residents can do to immediately reduce their travel related impacts.

‘The tourists turned into residents’: Tahoe’s off-season is disappearing Julie Brown On a Friday night in March, Heather Adams was writing down names at the front door of PlumpJack Cafe, a popular restaurant near the ski lifts at Squaw Valley. After closing for months because of the pandemic, the restaurant had recently reopened with only 13 tables, far fewer than normal. But in the middle of winter in Tahoe, fewer tables doesn’t mean fewer people. The demand for those tables was high. Adams’ wait list grew and grew. “At one point, I sat at the podium for a solid half hour or 45 minutes just writing down people’s names for tables that I didn’t have for them,” Adams said.
