Texting while driving law takes effect in Arizona today | Local News Stories

It’s now illegal in the state of Arizona to hold a mobile communications device or for a person to support such a device with their body while driving.  It is also against the law to read, write or send text messages while driving, or to scroll through social media or record handheld videos while driving. According to Lake Havasu City Police Sgt. Tom Gray, officers have educated the public since the bill was signed into law in April 2019. “Our officers are already trained to look for reckless driving behaviors and other traffic infractions,” Gray said this week. “The new law will not require any additional training. Our officers will take enforcement action when necessary if anyone is observed to be driving recklessly. Our goal is to keep our community roadways safe for everyone.”

Officers helped rescue man from burning house

Two Lake Havasu City Police officers have been named after entering a burning building earlier this week to rescue an elderly occupant. The fire took place Monday afternoon on the 2000 block of Tradewind Drive. Police say the victim was trapped in his bed, and unable to leave on his own. A family member of the homeowner was monitoring the location remotely, police said, and contacted emergency dispatchers as soon as he saw the fire begin. When thick smoke began to rise from the residence, police say a nearby construction worker kicked in the home’s door. Responding officers Andrew Vega and Paige Van Pelt entered the home soon after, where they located and rescued the elderly resident from his home.

Police shooting at Havasu Hobby Lobby injures man wanted on warrants

A wanted man was shot by a Lake Havasu City Police officer Thursday evening in the Kiowa Boulevard Shopping Center. The incident occurred at about 6:15 p.m., when a man wanted on multiple warrants entered a Hobby Lobby location in the shopping center. According to Lake Havasu City Police Sgt. Tom Gray, officers pursued the male suspect into the store, where a confrontation took place. According to Gray, the exact details of that confrontation could not be disclosed as of Thursday evening, nor could Gray confirm that the man was armed. A witness in the store told Today’s News-Herald that police confronted the man near the rear of the building, in the canvas area. Officers wrestled with the man for a moment when a “pop” was heard, said the witness, who asked to remain anonymous. The man lied on the ground, groaning, as an officer told him he shouldn’t have reached for a gun.
