House of Cards Robin Wright: I think the crack in the glass ceiling is getting bigger

Should we be surprised it has taken Robin Wright this long to direct a feature film? She has been in or adjacent to the business for about 40 years. Raised in San Diego in the US, Wright did some modelling in her early teens before securing a role in the daytime soap Santa Barbara. The international breakthrough came in 1987 with her role as Buttercup – “probably the most beautiful woman in the world” – in the immortal Princess Bride. She has never gone away. A famously on-off-on-off marriage to Sean Penn came to an end in 2010. You can see her in Forrest Gump, Unbreakable and David Fincher’s the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She helped launch the streaming television revolution when, in 2013, House of Cards landed in one bingey lump. Wright directed 10 episodes of that political drama and now finally delivers an impressive feature debut with Land. Movie review / Land (M) | Canberra CityNews

“Land” (M) and a half THIS is a “nice” movie. What’s nice about it? Its dramatic structure is simple. It’s credible. It doesn’t demand more of the filmgoer than the filmgoer might be prepared to give.  It doesn’t emblazon the screen with over-the-top, adrenalin-stimulating, look-at-me moments. And its run-time including closing credits is a comfy 89 minutes. That’s not to say that it lacks conflict or its own kind of excitement.  So what’s it about? Edee (producer/director Robin Wright) has bought herself a remote Wyoming bush block (it’s actually in Alberta, Canada). She wants to be alone.

LAND (in theaters and Amazon Prime on demand) Actress Robin Wright stars in and directs “Land,”  a provocative, compelling feature written by Jesse Chatham and Erin Dignam. “Land” is the story of a broken, grieving woman named Edee Mathis (Wright), who leaves the city and settles in a remote cabin in the Rockies. Although she knows nothing about living off the grid, Edee embraces the concept of being alone in her misery. Whether she lives or dies seems mostly irrelevant to Edee. A series of flashbacks confirm that she once had a family. After a terrifying confrontation with a bear, Edee then realizes how precarious her situation has become. Unable to fend for herself, she suffers in the freezing weather. Then an actual blizzard arrives.
