LA GRANDE â One of Union Countyâs most popular recreation areas will be temporarily closed.
The Union County Board of Commissioners voted 3-0 on Wednesday, July 21, to immediately close the Mount Emily Recreation Area for at least a week due to high fire danger brought on by dry, hot weather. â¨
The board will review the status of the closure at its July 28 meeting and may reopen MERA if fire danger has dropped.
MERA, a forested site of about 3,670 acres about 2 miles from downtown La Grande, is a popular location for outdoor activities, including mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding and riding all-terrain vehicles.â¨

UNION COUNTY â Exhausted hikers and mountain bikers at the Mount Emily Recreation Area now can recharge in a new building at the edge of Caffeine Trail.
The structure is not a coffee shop but a large lean-to type of building that provides protection from the sun and rain. Forrest Warren of Summerville constructed the structure. He is a retired educator, a farmer and the Imbler Rural Fire Departmentâs assistant chief.
