Cape Cod State Rep Steven Xiarhos is receiving his first committee assignments.
The Fifth Barnstable District republican will serve as the ranking minority member on the joint committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs and hold the same position on the Joint Committee on State Administration and Regulatory Oversight.
He will also serve on the Public Safety and Homeland Security and the Elder Affairs committees.

Members of the local legislative delegation condemned Wednesday’s violence in the nation’s capital. The violence in Washington played out Wednesday afternoon shortly after Massachusetts state legislators took the oath of office for new terms in the Statehouse.
State Sen. Susan Moran, D-Falmouth, said the mob violence was horrifying, but was a call to action for Americans to come together to work for a common good.
State Rep. Mathew Muratore, R-Plymouth, called the storming and occupation of the Capitol building despicable and an embarrassment to the nation.
State Rep. Kathleen LaNatra, D-Kingston, reacted to the day’s events with many emotions while calling for all to be vigilant about upholding democracy.

Two freshmen state legislators from Cape Cod were sworn in yesterday.
Democrat Kip Diggs won the 2nd Barnstable District seat in November, while Republican Steven Xiarhos took the Fifth Barnstable District seat.
A scaled-down swearing-in ceremony took place on Beacon Hill.
