Bord Bia must officially recognise ICSA

December 15, 2020, 6:00 pm The fact that the president of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) does not sit on the board of Bord Bia is a shocking indictment of the food marketing body’s approach to Ireland’s farming industry. The omission, where ICSA is concerned, is made all the more significant, given the fact that the presidents of  both the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) and the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) already enjoy a seat around the ‘big table’. Both the candidates in the ongoing ICSA presidential race have said they will bring this matter to Bord Bia’s attention as soon as the election is out of the way.

Serious logistical disruption cannot be avoided even with Brexit trade deal

Serious logistical disruption to exports cannot be avoided in January even if a Brexit trade deal is concluded, an Irish parliamentary committee has heard. The Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) president said farmers need to brace themselves for a “massive crisis” if negotiations between the UK and the EU fail. Edmond Phelan said: “We have come to the edge of the precipice in the Brexit trade negotiations and right now we can only hope that common sense prevails. “Even then, it has been left very late to avoid major disruption in January and the possibility of no deal is still very real.

Increase to November milk price warranted on its own right

December 15, 2020 1:34 pm The increase to milk price for November supplies “was warranted on its own right”, according to the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA). Reacting to milk price announcements made so far, ICMSA dairy chairperson Gerald Quain said that farmers would feel that an increase to base price was warranted in its own right “as a recognition of the small degree of stability offered by the acceptance of the Irish Protocol last week”. Quain said that while nobody imagined that November price was hugely significant in terms of revenue in the round of the year, it would serve as a realistic platform for price in spring 2021 – and those production months that were much more significant in annual income terms.

Brexit on table again for Oireachtas agriculture committee this week

December 14, 2020 4:14 pm The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will be devoted to Brexit and related issues when it sits tomorrow (Tuesday, December 15). Four stakeholder organisations will come before the committee tomorrow, in two separate sessions. The committee will not have one meeting this week, but two. On Thursday, the committee will sit again where TDs and senator will discuss, among other issues, African swine fever (ASF). Again, this meeting will be across two separate sessions. Tomorrow’s meeting will be in Committee Room 4, which will see representatives from the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) and the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) speak on Brexit from 4:00pm.
