A “minimum” milk price for April should be 35c/L, according to the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA).
Speaking ahead of processor price announcements for April milk, ICMSA Dairy Committee chairman Ger Quain said that, while milk prices have moved forward in recent months, “there is still room for improvement”.
Farmers expect to see that in the upcoming announcements, he said, adding:
“Milk markets have stabilised in general with gains for powders being offset by small reductions in butter. Overall, it is encouraging to see stability at a relatively high level following a number of months of significant prices.

I heartily commend the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) in developing its new milk price tracking system.
However, it only takes us part of the way when it comes to holding the dairy co-ops to account for, allegedly, underpaying suppliers.
What’s also required is an absolute commitment from ICMSA to publically ‘call out’ the individual co-ops, each time they are believed to have underpaid farmer suppliers.
Milk price tracking
Then the next question arises: Where do we go from there? Irish dairy farmers are very restricted in terms of moving from one milk buyer to another, should they ever wish to.

Following the publication of a ‘statement of intent’ from Bord na Móna (BNM) last week, one farm organisation has said it “falls short of what is required”.
BNM issued the statement in an effort to alleviate concerns over its bog rehabilitation and rewetting plans.
It has been feared by farm organisations and local politicians that the rewetting process may inadvertently lead to the flooding of adjacent farmland.
Reacting to BMM’s statement, the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) acknowledged the distance BNM went in making the statement.
ICMSA president Pat McCormack said yesterday (Wednesday, April 28), that he had no objection to the project itself and that he didn’t doubt BNM’s good faith.
