The European Commission s Take On Novel Genomic Techniques (NGTs) In Light Of CJEU s Ruling In Case C-528/16 | Morrison & Foerster LLP

Do you really need to drink 8 glasses of water a day? An exercise scientist explains why your kidneys say no

Exercising can increase your need to drink water, but there’s no need to overdo it. (The Great Brigade/Getty Images) The warmer weather and longer days have inspired reminders to “stay hydrated” and drink eight glasses of water – or about two liters – a day. Not to burst anyone’s water bottle, but healthy people can actually diefrom drinking too much water. I am an exercise physiologist, and my research focuses on overhydrationand how drinking too much water affects the body. Since water – and sodium – balance is essential to life, it is extremely rarefor people to die from drinking too much – or too little – fluid. In most cases, your body’s finely tuned molecular processes are unconsciously taking care of you.

Europe s food agency changes its mind on titanium dioxide in food | News

By Rebecca Trager2021-05-25T13:31:00+01:00 Titanium dioxide, which is used as a colourant in many common household items such as toothpaste, sunscreen, paint and food colouring, ‘can no longer be considered as safe when used as a food additive’, according to an updated safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa). The Efsa expert panel concluded that the absorption of titanium dioxide particles is low after oral ingestion, but they can accumulate in the body and genotoxicity concerns cannot be excluded. This new evaluation revises Efsa’s previous assessment from 2016, which found that titanium dioxide was safe for food applications but that further research was needed to fill in the gaps. The agency said its new determination is based on a review of many thousands of studies that have become available recently, including new scientific evidence and data on nanoparticles.

These key discussions are the lead-up to a decision on whether or not new GMOs should be subject to safety checks or labelling before being allowed on the EU market. On the agenda of tomorrow’s agriculture council is a study released by the European Commission in April which suggests that there are strong indications that the current 2001 GMO legislation is not fit for purpose for some NGTs [ new genomic techniques ] and their products , and proposes a new consultation process to rewrite the laws.[1]
