Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith coped best in driving wind and rain to
beat a stellar 100 metres field including United States rival
Sha’Carri Richardson as England’s north-east town of Gateshead
hosted the opening Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season.

The 100 metres, as expected, provided the highlight of yesterday s Golden Gala meeting on the Mount San Antonio College track in Walnut, California.
But it was the women s racing, rather than the men s, that caught the attention as 21-year-old home sprinter Sha Carri Richardson, with hair of brightest blue, confirmed her status as an early phenomenon of the Olympic season by clocking 10.74sec in the heats.
With a 1.1 metres-per-second wind at her back, she then won the final in 10.77 into a 1.2mps headwind.
According to the statistician s reckoning that would have been worth 10.69 in still conditions - faster than the 10.72 she clocked earlier this season to go sixth on the all-time list. If you want to push it, it would have been 10.58 with the maximum allowable tailwind of 2mps for record purposes.

The 55,000-capacity Silesian Stadium is being lined up to host track and field events and Andrzej Krasnicki, President of the Polish Olympic Committee (PKOI), said he was “hopeful” of including athletics on the programme in the “near future”.
Jamaican team withdraw from World Athletics Relays over COVID-19 restrictions Friday, 23 April 2021
Organisers of next month s World Athletics Relays have been dealt a major blow following the withdrawal of a star-studded Jamaican team due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Two-time Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah and former 100 metres world record holder Asafa Powell were among a string of stars set to represent Jamaica in Silesia in Poland.
But the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) has confirmed the 39-strong team will not be able to take part at the event, scheduled to run from May 1 to 2.
The JAAA said COVID-19 restrictions had made travelling extremely challenging for the Jamaican athletes and officials, so pulled out.
