EU and US alcohol industry associations are welcoming the four month suspension of retaliatory tariffs related to the Airbus-Boeing dispute.
The alcohol industry has suffered collateral damage in a long-running dispute between the EU and US over aircraft subsidies: with several rounds of tariffs on unrelated goods – including alcohol – brought into force since 2019.
In October that year, the US imposed 25% tariffs on drinks such as French wine, Scotch and Irish whiskies; followed by the EU’s imposition of 25% tariffs on US alcohol such as rum, brandy, vodka and vermouth in November 2020; and US imposition on further EU goods such as Cognac in January 2021.

The EU and US have agreed to suspend all retaliatory tariffs on EU and US exports imposed in the Airbus and Boeing disputes for a four-month period.
The move was announced by both sides this evening (Friday, March 5) and will see hefty tariffs dropped from Irish dairy and pork goods destined for the US.
Irish products which had been subject to “additional import duties of 25% ad valorem” included: single-malt Irish whiskey; liqueurs; cheese; pork; yogurt; butter; dairy spreads; fats and oils derived from milk; and a variety of seafood.
In a statement this evening, the European Commission said that the suspension “allows both sides to focus on resolving this long-running dispute”.
Frans Timmermans said.
“If we make our adaptation smarter, swifter, and more systemic, we will be able to – and especially also add the international component – we will be able to learn from our partners, to learn from each other, and to make sure we adapt more quickly,” he said.
“First, to make adaptation smarter, we need more data collection and data sharing. With more precise modelling on future hazards, farmers can better plan the crops they plant, families buying a home will know what climate risks they may face, businesses will know how to make new production facilities fit for a hotter planet, and cities will know how to protect their residents from weather extremes,” Timmermans said.
